Talkeetna is a mecca for mountain climbers. Climbers from the world over begin their climb of Mount McKinley right here in Talkeetna by registering at the Denali National Park Mountaineering Ranger Station, around the corner at the far end of town. They fly into their base camp with one of several air taxis located at the airstrip on the right as you enter town. These companies also offer experiences for the less adventuresome as well. A flightseeing trip around Mount McKinley or an opportunity to actually land on a glacier will be one of the best memories of your trip to Alaska.
You can catch glimpses of Mount McKinley from several places in Talkeetna, but the best view by far is from the Talkeetna Spur Road overlook on the left just before you get into town. The Talkeetna Spur Road is a 14-mile scenic drive at mile 98.7 off the Parks Highway.
